The Mother Load

This message centers on Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a model for what it means to be called by God. Drawing from Luke chapter 1, we explore the Annunciation and discover that God doesn't call the perfect—He calls the humble, obedient, and faithful. Mary was just a teenager, an ordinary young woman from Nazareth, yet she responded to God's extraordinary calling with remarkable humility: 'Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it unto me according to thy word.' What makes this so relevant to us today is the recognition that modern mothers face an overwhelming mental and emotional load, amplified by unrealistic societal expectations and social media pressures. The message challenges us to reject the myth of perfection and instead embrace faithful servanthood. Like Mary, we're called to walk in humility, practice obedience, remain faithful through all circumstances, and be unashamed of the gospel. The sermon reminds us that nearly half of mothers today report being so stressed they can barely function—a staggering statistic that demands we prioritize time with God above productivity. We're encouraged to create space for spiritual discipline, nurture Christian friendships, be present rather than merely productive, and cast our anxieties on the Lord. The beautiful truth is that God uses ordinary people who make themselves available to Him, just as He used Mary, Hannah, Jochebed, and countless other faithful women throughout Scripture.
