Faithful in the Fall
In a world that feels like it's spinning out of control, where do we turn for stability? This message from the book of Amos reminds us that chaos isn't new—humanity has been broken since the fall. The prophet Amos, just an ordinary farmer called by God, witnessed a nation blessed with prosperity yet spiritually bankrupt, worshiping idols, neglecting God's word, and oppressing the poor. Sound familiar? When God showed Amos a plumb line—that ancient tool used to ensure walls are built straight and true—He was revealing something profound: His word is the unchanging standard against which everything must be measured. We're tempted to use faulty plumb lines—our emotions that fluctuate daily, our opinions formed from eight-second video clips, our traditions that may have drifted from truth, our past situations that hold us captive, or our positions that make us feel superior or inferior. But none of these can guide us accurately. The call is clear and urgent: seek the Lord. Not the world's philosophies, not social media's outrage cycle, not our own understanding—but Him. When Peter walked on water, he stayed afloat only while his eyes remained on Christ; the moment he focused on the storm, he sank. In this fallen world that's doing exactly what God said it would, we have access to the one thing that never changes, never fades, and always speaks truth. The question isn't what's happening around us, but whether we're measuring our lives against the eternal plumb line of God's word.
